Cave of the Mounds

The most obvious choice of a fun activity to do near Cave of the Mounds is Cave of the Mounds itself! This natural limestone cave offers tours daily on paved and lighted walkways. Tours pass a stunning array of colorful crystal formations including stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Enjoy the constant 50-degree year-round temperature. While on the grounds, have a picnic and enjoy gemstone and fossil mining, the Rock and Gift Shop, Perennial Gardens, and Oak Valley Restoration.

Troll Hunt

Mount Horeb is known for the variety of life-size trolls carved into tree trunks along its main street, now dubbed “The Trollway”. With more than 20 trolls, the troll hunt is on. There are so many local shops to explore and local dining like The Grumpy Troll! Discover the region’s rich Scandinavian history. Tyrol Basin

Just 3 miles from Cave of the Mounds is a fun place to visit all year long. In the winter, Tyrol Basin is a skier and snowboarder’s paradise situated in a scenic valley. Enjoy the 16 tree-lined trails that extend over 40 acres on the 300-foot vertical hill. Now with tubing in the winter. In the summer they have a delicious BBQ Restaurant and are soon to have disc golf. In October there is a haunted house, fall chair lift rides, and more to explore as this place gets better each year!

Driftless Historium

Cave of the Mounds is located in what is known as the Driftless Area. A little over 4 miles away is the Driftless Historium in Mount Horeb. This museum and research center focuses on the connection between the unique Driftless landscape and the history of the people who have lived here. Founded by the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, the Driftless Historium has exhibits, programming, and research opportunities. This place is perfect for any history lover!

Blue Mounds State Park

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Cave of the Mounds is the Blue Mounds State Park. Located on the highest point in Southern Wisconsin, this State Park offers hiking, swimming, camping, and biking opportunities. There are two lookout points on top of the mounds and during a clear day, you can see miles and miles.

Book a workshop or schedule a Private Event and release your creative side! Plus, beer and wine are available for purchase in the studio.

Botham Vineyards

About 9 minutes from Cave of the Mounds is a winery in Barneveld, Wisconsin. They have wine tastings and a shop filled with their delectable wine. Bring a picnic to accompany Botham Vineyard’s wide selection of wines and relax on their expansive terrace. There are also tours available but must be scheduled beforehand.
