Cave of the Mounds is seeking flexible part time help.  No experience or training is necessary, we will teach you all that you need to know.  This is a perfect opportunity for someone who might want a few hours while kids are in school, for retirees, or for anyone with some extra time on their hands who likes people and caves!  

 Depending on your abilities and availabilities, typical duties include:

  • Learning and sharing knowledge of science and history to the guests inside of the Cave in a safe, fun and educational manner.  Paid training, no experience necessary! Our tours are self-paced, so you get to talk to guests one-on one as they walk through our beautiful cave. 
  • Assisting in our gift shop helping guests, cash handling on a user-friendly iPad-based system 
  • Helping to keep our buildings and grounds clean and safe for guests from around the world

(Ages 16 and Up)

General Responsibilities

Provide our guests with an entertaining and educational experience both above and below ground through excellent customer service, exhibits, activities, facilities and interpretation while conserving our natural resources.

Duties:

  • Tell the story of the Cave – its formation, growth, discovery, development, and protection – throughout all aspects of time
  • Greet the public with a smile and provide helpful information.
  • Interact with guests as they travel through the cave in a safe, fun, and educational manner.
  • Assist in receiving and merchandising products as well as staffing our rock & fossil shop.
  • Assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of the buildings and grounds

Qualified Candidates will have:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a friendly manner.
  • A desire for interaction with the general public and public speaking.
  • Interest in the natural environment, nature appreciation, nature education.
  • Good conflict resolution skills and desire to work as a team member.
  • The desire to do a wide variety of tasks in the course of a workday.

Opportunities are available for part-time positions for seasonal or year-round work with possibilities of full-time employment. A perfect position for an active retiree!

Cave of the Mounds, National Natural Landmark is looking for hard working individuals who can work both independently and as a team to care for our park grounds, buildings, and cave. The Facilities and Grounds team members are responsible for working with our Facilities and Grounds Manager to maintain the lawns, buildings, gardens, prairie and oak savannas, cave and outdoor areas in general. The duties and responsibilities may include, building and equipment maintenance, planting, pruning, weeding, brush cutting, invasive species removal, care of equipment, and lawn care. General knowledge of grounds, building maintenance, plumbing, basic construction, or HVAC is preferred, but not required. Physical requirements include walking, bending, lifting, stairs and kneeling. Must have a valid driver’s license and be 18 or older. Wage and benefits offered will vary depending on the position offered, your availability, and your experience.

Garden Team Members

Opportunities are available for both full time and part time positions starting immediately or seasonally. A perfect position for an active retiree!   Shift hours and pay are negotiable for the right candidate. We are looking for the right candidate – therefore depending on the position offered, your availability and experience the wage and benefits offered will vary.

Cave of the Mounds, National Natural Landmark is looking for hard working individuals who love working outdoors to join our team. These positions provide the opportunity to help create and maintain the beauty of our grounds and underground as well.

The Parks & Gardens Maintenance Crew members are responsible for working with our Facilities and Grounds Manager to maintain the gardens, prairie and oak savanna areas, lawns, buildings, cave and outdoor areas in general. The duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Planting, pruning, weeding
  • Weed and pest control
  • Light maintenance duties: cleaning, daily chores, painting, etc.
  • Use of brush cutters, blowers, mowers and other small engine tools
  • Care of equipment: includes repair and upkeep of equipment
  • Care of lawns: mowing, weed whacking, raking, etc.
  • Invasive species removal

Physical Functions Required:

  • Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Requires bending, stooping, reaching up, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to navigate stairs and uneven terrain
  • Possible exposure to chemicals requiring special clothing or safety equipment.
  • Ability to use motorized equipment. Must be 18 or older. Drivers license required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety material and facility required documents.
