(Ages 14 and Up)

General Responsibilities 

Provide our guests with an entertaining and educational experience both above and below ground through excellent customer service, exhibits, activities, facilities and interpretation while conserving our natural resources.

Duties:

  • Greet the public with a smile and provide helpful information.
  • Assist in staffing our rock & fossil shop and receiving/ merchandising products.
  • Help to maintain neat, clean and safe buildings and grounds through typical tasks and chores such as sweeping, mopping, trash removal, cleaning restrooms, dusting, raking, etc.
  • Assist guests in cracking open geodes
  • Assist guests in purchasing mining rough or fossil dig items
  • Assist with souvenir photos, reprints and saving to a USB drive as needed.

Qualified Candidates will have:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a friendly manner.
  • A desire for interaction with the general public.
  • Interest in the natural environment, nature appreciation, nature education.
  • Good conflict resolution skills and desire to work as a team member.
  • The desire to do a wide variety of tasks in the course of a workday.

  • Greet the public with a smile and provide helpful information.
  • Interact with guests as they travel through the cave in a safe, fun, and educational manner.
  • Assist in receiving and merchandising products as well as staffing our rock & fossil shop.
  • Assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of the buildings and grounds

Ages 16 and Up)

Cave of the Mounds, National Natural Landmark is looking for hard-working individuals who love working outdoors to join our parks and gardens maintenance team.  This position provides an opportunity to be part of the team that creates and maintains the beautiful landscape of our park.

Role:

  • Full and/or part-time seasonal positions available
  • Work in all weather conditions
  • Shifts vary – we are open seven days a week
  • Work in a team

The Parks & Gardens Maintenance Crew position is responsible for working under the supervision of the Facilities and Grounds Manager to maintain the gardens, prairie and oak savanna areas, lawns, buildings, and outdoor areas in general. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Keep the tool, work, and maintenance inventory areas clean and orderly
  • Planting, pruning, weeding
  • Weed and pest control
  • Use of brush cutters, blowers, mowers and other small engine tools
  • Care of equipment: includes repair and upkeep of equipment
  • Light maintenance duties: cleaning, daily chores, painting, etc.
  • Care of lawns: mowing, weed whacking, raking, etc.
  • Ability to identify (or learn to identify) plant species 
  • Maintenance of ornamental garden beds
  • Invasive species removal
  • Other duties and projects as assigned 

This is a limited-term position with hours between March 15 and November 15, as needed. Experience in the following areas is a plus: outdoor grounds/landscaping; organization; operation of outdoor equipment; and/or gardening. You must be an outgoing, motivated, self-starter who can think on your feet and work without direct supervision.

Physical Functions Required:
• Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods.
• Requires bending, stooping, reaching up, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Possible exposure to chemicals requiring special clothing or safety equipment.
• Ability to use motorized equipment.
• Ability to read and comprehend safety material and facility required documents.

(Ages 16 and Up)

Cave of the Mounds is looking for both full-time and part-time facilities and grounds team members who can maintain a safe, clean, and beautiful environment worthy of a world-class attraction.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must be organized, self-motivated, hard-working, reliable, mentally flexible, willing to learn new skills, have good troubleshooting skills, and the ability to take initiative and work independently. Basic experience with (or ability and willingness to learn): plumbing, electrical, equipment maintenance, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, herbicide applications, grounds maintenance, snow plowing, skid steer use, small engine equipment (such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, and brush saws), utility vehicle, and light construction and carpentry experience, as well as basic computer skills are a must. Must have good teamwork skills, and enjoy working with people of all ages and have the ability to interface with customers in a tourism environment. Must be able and willing to consistently and enthusiastically represent and model the high maintenance and cleanliness standards of Cave of the Mounds while working alongside co-workers and seasonal maintenance helpers. We are open seven days a week, year-round, so weekend work is a must. The scope of this position changes throughout the year and from season to season.

Facilities Maintenance

*Complete daily/weekly / monthly and seasonal chore items per established protocols. (Examples of the types of tasks include but are not limited to building maintenance, trash removal, general cleaning, monitoring and maintaining safety gear, etc.).

*Assist with project planning and implementation including problem-solving and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

*Assist in supervising the use of equipment (including electronics), its repair and upkeep, and advise management of equipment needs.

*Keep the tool, work, and maintenance inventory areas clean and orderly.

*Maintain organization of parts and tool inventory.

*Assist Facilities / Grounds Manager with organization and monitoring of maintenance files and logs both physical and digital.

*Organize cleaning supplies, paper products, and miscellaneous buildings and grounds supplies.

*Organize tool, shop, and work areas to maintain efficient workspace by keeping tools in good order and in their proper place.

*Janitorial duties include cleaning/maintaining: building floors, carpets, bathroom fixtures, windows, doors, painting walls/doors or similar structures, vacuuming, and dusting.

Grounds Maintenance

Assist with upkeep of the grounds and the grounds equipment maintenance needs of the business including repairs and upkeep of: walkways, driveways, parking lots, drains, irrigation, picnic tables, grassy areas, wooded trails, and outdoor high traffic areas. Performing tasks to include, but not limited to:

*Complete daily/weekly / monthly and seasonal grounds chore items according to established protocols. Examples of the types of tasks include but are not limited to cave cleaning, maintaining outdoor trails, weed trimming, trash/litter removal around grounds, maintaining bird feeders, picnic tables, and shelters, grounds and gardens upkeep, firewood processing, snow removal, invasive species removal.

*Assist with trail building and landscaping.

*Assist with basic masonry and carpentry projects for the upkeep of parking lots and paved trails.

*Assist with prairie and woodland conservation projects through mechanical pulling of weeds, herbicide application, cutting, seed gathering, and use of controlled burns.

*Work on implementing Cave Management plan in conservation easement areas only as overseen by managers.
