Be sure to get our good side.

As one of the Midwest’s most unique natural wonders, the nature at Cave of the Mounds often inspires the creativity in all of us: from the tallgrass prairie that runs down the hill to the half domes of crystal-laden water clinging to the tips of stalactites.

The unmatched stillness found below ground creates the perfect subject or backdrop in visual media, while the nature above ground acts as a dynamic, ever-changing image. We encourage all guests to memorialize their visit with us by taking photographs and videos as they explore the park both above and below ground.

Cave of the Mounds has hosted a variety of filmmakers and photographers throughout the years. Whether you’re looking to get some prom portraits and senior pics, or trying to videotape a commercial or short film, we are happy to work with you to achieve your vision. While all guests should be mindful of our guidelines of on-site photography/videography, much of the follow page will apply to those wishing to use the property in a professional capacity.

Photography Guidelines

These guidelines apply to ALL guests that take photos/videos during their visit.

  • Drones are permitted in Above Ground, outdoor spaces ONLY. Guests shooting drone footage are encouraged to share it with us at info@caveofthemounds.com.
  • Remain on pathways within the cave. Absolutely no climbing, sitting, or stepping on the rocks or formations.
  • Do not to step into the prairie, butterfly, or rock gardens. Walking on the lawns is encouraged.
  • Do not remove or otherwise disturb any plants, stones, animals, or water pools.
  • Be mindful of others around you. Do not block pathways with people or gear.
  • No props that are otherwise not allowed at Cave of the Mounds (e.g. no pets).
    • Allowable props may only be placed on lawns and trails. Props may not be left unattended.

Professional & Commercial Photography & Recordings

A professional shoot is filming or photography by a person, business, or other entity for an audience with the intent of generating income. This includes any shoots with paid photographers, props, or sets such as:

  • Posed/Formal photography, including but not limited to:
    • Prom photos
    • Wedding photos
    • Senior photos
    • Engagement photos
    • Graduation photos
  • Short films

Photo permits are required for all types of formal or professional shoots, above or below ground. Permits are required for access to the Cave of the Mounds park grounds outside of normal operating hours. If approved to have a session outside of normal business hours, on site bathrooms will be unavailable once the buildings close.

A commercial shoot or recording session is digital or film recording of a visual image or sound by a person, business, or other entity for a market audience such as:

  • Documentaries
  • Television specials
  • Feature films
  • Advertisements
  • Stock photography
  • Other similar projects

News coverage does not require a permit or contract for either filming or still photography but is subject to time, place, and manner restrictions (if warranted) to maintain order, ensure the safety of the public and the media, and to protect natural and cultural resources.

All commercial filming requires a contract subject to approval by management or appointee ahead of time. We require a minimum of 10 working days to review contracts and permits and evaluate location considerations and other logistics. Commercial filming is also subject to a fee depending on location and cost to monitor the activity.

Permit Types

Photographers must have a permit for each individual photo session or shoot with each client. Mini sessions (i.e. multiple 10-20min sessions with different subjects stacked into a short timeframe) are considered separate shoots and require an yearly photography permit. Single Day Permits are $30 and are for Above Ground areas only. Access to the cave must be paid for separately.

The annual permit allows multiple sessions with different clients in a day or on multiple occasions for one year starting from the permit purchase date. Yearly Permits are $300 and are for Above Ground areas only. Access to the cave must be paid for separately.
