Public Educational Programs

Enhance your Cave Tour by learning even more about Wisconsin geology and Cave of the Mounds! FUN for all ages, these programs are open to the public. Above ground hikes and storytime programs are FREE. For programs with a fee tickets can be purchased in advance online by selecting the links below. Tickets may also be purchased in person the day of your visit.

Monday’s – 11AM Rocks ROCK! Includes gem sluice bag & color ID card – $6 per person (with Cave Tour admission)
Head to the Quarry’s Edge Gemstone Mine to discover your very own rock and mineral collection and identify your specimens with one of our Environmental Educators. Participants will also investigate rocks and minerals, how they form, the rock cycle and the properties of the most basic materials that form planet Earth.

Tuesday’s – 6PM Tuesday Topics: Total Darkness Lantern Tour – Regular Tour Rates
Your guide will teach you about cave light – or should we say the lack of it – along the underground trails. Experience the cave in a way not featured on regular tours – by handheld light only. Learn a bit about the properties of light such as fluorescence, phosphorescence and triboluminescence along the way.

Head to the Quarry’s Edge Gemstone Mine to discover your very own rock and mineral OR fossil collection and identify your specimens with one of our Environmental Educators. Participants will also investigate planet Earth as a dynamic system and the orderly development of rocks and fossils through geologic time.

Friday’s – 11AM & 3 PM Guided Karst View Trail Hike – FREE
Walk and talk with one of our Environmental Educators and explore the grounds around the east Blue Mound. Participants will learn about the karst landscape by touring the sinkholes, walking above the cave passageways, and the Discovery Site of Cave of the Mounds!

You’ll gather at the giant amethyst geodes in front of our Quarry’s Edge Gift Shop where an Environmental Educator teaches you all about geodes before, during and after reading aloud the picture book “Geo the Geode.” Afterwards, enjoy deep discounts on a selection of our Break-Your-Own-Geodes!

Saturday’s – 4PM SpeleoQUEST! Includes cephalopod fossil specimen – $3 per person (with Cave Tour admission)
Speleology is the study of caves – what they are and how they form. Walk and talk with one of our Environmental Educators and explore the grounds around the east Blue Mound. Participants will learn about the karst landscape by touring the sinkholes on the property along with other clues that tell us there are caves in this area.

Discover the connections between the natural and cultural history of southwest Wisconsin as it relates to Cave of the Mounds: from the earliest settlers through the lead mining boom and right up to the discovery of the cave during the great depression. Includes an outdoor tour of historic points of interest on the property.
