Public Educational Programs

Enhance your Cave Tour by learning even more about Wisconsin geology and Cave of the Mounds! FUN for all ages, these programs are open to the public. Above ground hikes and storytime programs are FREE. For programs with a fee tickets can be purchased in advance online by selecting the links below. Tickets may also be purchased in person the day of your visit.

Enjoy the Park! Open 9am – 7:15pm

Quarry’s Edge Gift Shop and Mining Sluice – Rocks, minerals and fossils from all over the world delight geology lover’s of all ages! Hand pick your favorites or uncover your own collection at the sluice!

Barn Fossil Hunt – Learn about the fossils commonly found in southwest Wisconsin. Then, search the limestone foundation of our historic barn and find authentic Wisconsin fossils!

Fossil Dig and Crystal Quest – Be a paleontologist for the day and dig up your very own fossils and crystals! Or, you can get a dig block and use tools to excavate an authentic fossil specimen!

Trails and Gardens – Discover the grounds around the mound! Grab an Interpretive Trail Guide and Geologic Time booklet and learn all about caves, sinkholes and how Wisconsin has changed through geologic time.

Barn Discovery Center Open 11am – 4pm FREE
Learn about of Cave of the Mounds history and participate in hands-on educational activities.

9:30AM – Total Darkness Lantern Tour Regular Admission
Experience the cave in a way not featured on regular tours – by handheld light only! Learn a bit about the properties of light such as fluorescence, phosphorescence and triboluminescence along the way. Meet at the Quarry’s Edge Gift Shop. BUY TICKETS

11:00 AM – RocksROCK! Educational Program $6 per person (includes sluice collection)
Discover your very own rock and mineral collection at our sluice! Identify your specimens with one of our Educators and investigate rocks and minerals – the most basic materials that form planet Earth. Meet at the Adventure Outpost. BUY TICKETS

1:00PM – All About Geodes! FREE (Geodes available for purchase)
You’ll gather at the giant amethyst geodes where an Educator teaches you all about geodes! Afterwards, enjoy deep discounts on a selection of our Break-Your-Own-Geodes! Meet at the Amethyst Geodes by the Quarry’s Edge Gift Shop.

3:00 PM – Habitat Hunt Educational Program $6 per person (includes fossil collection)
Discover the many habitats at Cave of the Mounds – present and past – then uncover your fossil collection at the mining sluice! BUY TICKETS

Experience a more in-depth science-based Cave Tour that orients the underground to the above ground and then take a 20-30 minute guided walk above the cave. BUY TICKETS
