Cave Tour Guidelines

1. Your tour will be announced by ticket color inside the Gift Shop.

2. Rest rooms are not available during your tour inside the Cave. Restrooms are located in the Visitor Center.

3. For the protection of the fragile cave environment, touching the rocks and Cave formations is prohibited.

4. Flash photography is welcome on the tour, however tripods, monopods and selfie-sticks are prohibited.

5. Remember that the Cave is a cool 50 degrees. Please dress appropriately.

6. The tour lasts about one hour and covers approximately 2/3 of a mile. There are stairs with handrails, and paved, lighted walkways in the cave.

7. Food, drink and tobacco products are prohibited in the Cave.

8. Framed child carriers, strollers, backpacks, large bags and walkers are prohibited in the Cave.

9. While families are welcome, parents need to be responsible for their own children. Please keep in mind that loud noises during the tour will disturb other visitors in the Cave.

10. Accessibility: The Cave is not wheelchair accessible, however, most above ground activities are. A written tour is available upon request. A touch wall with examples of various cave formations is available at the Cave entrance. A 3D Virtual Tour of the entire cave has been developed and a link is available upon request. Adaptive activity backpacks are available upon request.

Cave of the Mounds is open rain or shine all year long. The consistent 50 degree temperture makes the cave feel nice and cool on those hot summer days and nice and warm on the cold winter days.

SUMMER: Memorial Day Weekend – Labor Day: Weekdays and Weekends – 20-30 minute intervals 9 am – 7 pm (last tour departs at 6 pm). The Cave is a COOL 50 Degrees!

FALL: Tuesday after Labor Day Weekend – November 15: Weekdays – Tours on the hour (first tour 10 am / last tour 4 pm), Grounds open 9 am to 5 pm Weekends – 30 Minute Intervals (first tour 9:30 am / last tour 5 pm), Grounds open 9 am to 6 pm

WINTER: November 16 – March 14: Monday through Friday: Tours on the hour (first tour 11 am / last tour 2 pm), Grounds open 10:30 am to 3 pm - Please call ahead (608-437-3038) to reserve. Saturdays and Sundays: Tours on the hour (first tour 10 am / last tour 4 pm), Grounds open 10 am to 5 pm – No reservations are needed.

1. Take the beltline HWYS 12/18 2. Exit onto HWYS 18W/151S exit # 258 (also called the Dodgeville exit, Midvale Rd., or Verona Rd.) 3. Travel on 18W/151S for 25 miles (We are just 5 miles west of Mt. Horeb) 4. Turn right onto Cave of the Mounds Rd. (no exit ramp) 5. Follow the signs for a half a mile to our parking lot (turn right onto CTY ID, immediate left onto Cave of the Mounds Rd., parking lot is up the road on the left)

From Milwaukee:

1. Take I-94W towards Madison 2. Merge left onto I-90 East/I-39S 3. Go 4 miles on I-90E/I-39S 4. Exit onto HWYS 12/18W (“The Beltline” Exit# 142A) 5. Follow 12/18W for 7 miles 6. Exit onto HWYS 18W/151S (Exit #258) 7. Follow the above Madison directions

From Rockford:

From Chicago:

From Wisconsin Dells:

1. Take HWY 12E toward Baraboo and Sauk City 2. After Sauk City turn right onto HWY 78S (it is a stop light) 3. Follow HWY 78S into Mt. Horeb 4. At the first round about in Mt. Horeb, turn right onto CTY ID (also called Main or Springdale) 5. Follow CTY ID for 5 miles 6. Turn right onto Cave of the Mounds Rd., parking lot is up the road on the left

Parking at Cave of the Mounds is FREE! Handicap parking is available at the bottom of the service drive. Parking for large campers and trailers is available near our Barn Discovery Center.

Cave Tour tickets can be purchased inside the Visitor Center. Regular admission is $18.95; tickets for children ages 4-12 are $10.95; children 3 and younger are FREE. Cave of the Mounds accepts cash, MasterCard, Visa and Discover.

It is not necessary to purchase tickets online in advance of your visit. Tickets purchased online do not guarantee a specific tour time. A tour time will be assigned when online tickets are redeemed on the day of your visit. If you are planning to visit Cave of the Mounds TODAY we recommend purchasing your tickets in person and not online.

Special Events and Specialty Tours do require advanced ticket purchase, either online or by phone.

Help support the conservation of Cave of the Mounds National Natural Landmark by becoming a Keys to the Cave member. Membership is good for 1 year from the date of your first Cave visit. You can purchase membership for multiple members at once. All proceeds of memberships go towards protecting this geologic treasure. Adult Membership price applies to ages 13 and up. Child Membership price applies to ages 4-12.

Cave of the Mounds endorses FREE gemstone mining coupons in some print publications and online. There are no online discounts endorsed by Cave of the Mounds for Cave Tour admission. Any Cave Tour discounts you may find online are not endorsed by Cave of the Mounds and are not legitimate discounts.

Cave of the Mounds is proud to serve a wide variety of groups ranging in age from pre-school through adulthood, for both recreational and educational purposes. We accept Group Program Reservations for groups of 20 or more with two weeks advanced reservation. A small group package is available for groups of 10 or more with two weeks advanced reservation.

We are delighted to offer FREE admission for our littlest spelunkers ages 3 and under! We have changing tables in the men's and women's restrooms. While strollers are not allowed inside the cave, we do have front facing baby carriers that you can borrow for no charge. We have a stroller parking area just outside the cave entrance building. For the comfort of your young child and for all cave tour guests - you may be asked to accompany your child out of the cave if your child becomes exceedingly upset or inconsolable during the course of your tour. Please check in at the Gift Shop desk should this occur.

1. Help preserve the park's serene atmosphere and maintain its unique and beautiful collections and native habitats. Please refrain from climbing on trees and shrubs, picking fruits and vegetables, walking in garden beds, collecting plants, flowers, or labels, and feeding wildlife.

2. Service animals are permitted on Garden grounds. No pets, please.

3. Picnic areas are available for our guests. Have your picnic in the picnic area, adjacent to parking lot. Please keep food out of the gardens and trails. Campfires are prohibited.

4. Park bikes in the rack provided.

5. Active sports and games — including rollerblading, skateboarding, use of scooters and Frisbees, and ball playing, — are not permitted.

6. Concealed carry firearms are prohibited on Cave of the Mounds property. Individuals who are licensed to carry concealed guns must safely store their firearms in their car’s glove compartment, trunk, or locked case while visiting Cave of the Mounds.

7. The Cave and buildings at Cave of the Mounds are smoke-free environments, including e-cigarettes. Please displose of cigarette butts properly in the containers provided on the grounds.

Cave of the Mounds has a snack bar offering bottled soft drinks, juice and water, hot coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cappuchino, four flavors of slushies, nachos, popcorn, chips, sandwiches, sausage and cheese trays and more. If you need a recommendation for a nearby restaurant please inquire at the Ticket Desk in the Visitor Center.

Our guests are welcome to take pictures inside the cave and throughout the park. Tri-pods, mono-pods and selfie sticks are not allowed inside the cave. A souvenir photo is taken of each family/group at the beginning of the Cave Tour and is available for purchase at the end of the tour. Professional/staged photography requires the purchase of a photo permit.

Postcards and stamps are available for purchase in the gift shop. A mailbox is available in front of the Visitor Center for sending postcards. A digital kiosk is available for guests to send an e-postcard to friends and family via email.

1. Pets are permitted in the upper main parking and picnic areas only and must be supervised and leashed – or otherwise contained – at all times.

2. Pets must be under owner control at all times. Pet owners are not allowed to let their pets interfere in any manner with other people's enjoyment of the park.

3. Loose pets may be seized and are subject to local laws pertaining to stray animals. If your pet is lost, inform the local authorities to find the location of the nearest stray-holding facility.

4. All pets - except service animals assisting people with disabilities - are prohibited in the cave, buildings and on interpretive nature trails.

5. Pet owners are responsible for proper removal and disposal of their pets' waste. Waste should be collected and contained in a pet waste bag and disposed of in trash receptacles.

6. Leaving your pet unattended in or near your vehicle for periods of time is dangerous to your pet, exposes you or your pet to potential problems, and is inconsiderate to other guests. Cave of the Mounds is not responsible for decisions made in regards to a pet’s health and safety.

7. Kennels are available to our guests for no charge. You can request a key for one of the kennels at the ticket desk in the Visitor Center.

There are several hotels and campgrounds within a short drive from Cave of the Mounds. There are also a variety of area attractions to experience. If you need some recommendations please inquire at the Ticket Desk in the Visitor Center.

Worth the trip by itself, our unique shop has thousands of rock, mineral, gem and fossil specimens you have to see to believe, many of them crafted into beautiful items for your home. We even have a variety of geodes available to break open here or when you get back home! We work with collectors from all over the world to gather this collection that looks like it belongs in a museum. But, unlike a museum, these items may be purchased and taken home. Browse and find a one of a kind treasure to keep for a lifetime.

Cave of the Mounds accepts cash, Mastercard, Visa and Discover. There is not an ATM on-site at Cave of the Mounds. There is an ATM at the Blue Mounds Citgo Grocery just down the road from Cave of the Mounds.

WNS in Wisconsin: For years, Cave of the Mounds has been committed to cooperating with state and federal agencies, as well as conservation groups, to provide information to the public on the value of bats and the threat posed by WNS. There are no bats in Cave of the Mounds and we are open daily year ’round for guided tours. If you want to learn more about WNS in Wisconsin, we encourage you to visit the Wisconsin DNR website.
